Do you enjoy working with plants, in the glasshouse, nursery and orchard? Would you like to work with data, equipment and a variety of activities in the field and laboratory?

This is a wonderful opportunity to grow your capability and skills in the practical aspects of Hop breeding.

What you will be doing | Ngā whāinga matua

This role provides technical support for the hop breeding programme, including managing seedling populations, assisting with harvest-related tasks and the sensory of hops and beer.

This varied role will see you:

  • Assisting in the practical aspects of the hop breeding programme, including seedling production, care and propagation in plant nursery, harvest operations, seed extraction, planting, sample collection etc., and hop evaluation (sensory work).
  • Assisting with brewing operations when required.
  • Providing routine technical observations, data analysis and assisting with formal reporting.
  • Conducting routine field and laboratory procedures and basic data collection.

To be successful in this role, the minimum qualifications required are:

  • Skills in plant nursery/orchard operations and/or plant propagation.
  • Previous knowledge and experience in data management and collection.
  • Be physically fit and able to do heavy lifting work.
  • Able to imbibe beer and be free of gluten intolerances to contribute to sensory tasting panels.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal working hours from time-to-time due to seasonal demands.
  • Flexibility to work reduced hours for three months of the year during the winter season as required.
  • A current full drivers licence.
