As part of Christchurch City Councils Regulatory Compliance Unit, the Compliance and Investigations team consists of eight passionate and committed Compliance Officers who investigate activities to ensure compliance with a variety of local policies and Government legislation. This includes the Building Act 2004, Resource Management Act 1991, Local Government Act 2002, Freedom Camping Act 2011, Litter Act 1979 and Christchurch City Council District Plan and Bylaws. Our officers are often out in the field and sometimes deal with challenging people and situations. They need a natural leader to offer continuous support and mentorship as well as someone who is committed to nurturing their teams professional growth.

As the Team Leader Compliance & Investigations you are responsible for the professional leadership and effective operations of the team. Working within the legislative framework and guidelines to uphold Councils reputation, ensure appropriate outcomes for Christchurch residents and hold people to account where necessary. We want someone who does what they say they are going to do, is an effective communicator, and makes time for their team. This role is varied, and will see you wearing many hats to fulfil the Unit priorities, which include:

  • Providing direction, empowerment, and motivation to the team
  • Role modelling shared values and behaviours
  • Ensuring policies and practices are being followed
  • Developing and maintaining a clear purpose for the team
  • Setting targets, plans, and performance measures
  • Where necessary dealing with contentious, sensitive or complex customers

Our ideal Team Leader will provide excellent leadership and mentoring to support the continuous development of the team. We want an encouraging and supportive people leader who communicates openly whilst having the ability to have tough conversations. To be successful you will also have:

  • Tertiary qualification at Degree level in Management, Building Industry, Resource Management, Investigation or Compliance OR
  • Extensive experience in leading a team of professionals in a regulatory role
  • 7 years + experience in an investigation, enforcement, compliance environment
  • 3 years + leading a team in interpreting and applying statutes and regulations in a compliance or investigation framework

Hours of work - 37.5 - 40 hours per week
Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
Salary - The salary band for this position goes from $111,553 to $123,948 per annum based on a 40 hour working week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
